Default tax for new purchase orders

Set a default tax rate once, and every new purchase order starts with it in the Tax field of the PO total. You don't need to type it on each PO. You can set one default for the whole store and a different one for each supplier.

Set a default tax for your store

  1. Go to Settings > Purchase orders.
  2. In Tax Configuration, enter the rate in Default tax (%), for example 10.

The value saves as soon as you leave the field. Leave it empty if you don't want a store default.

Set a default tax for a supplier

Use this when a supplier charges a different rate from the rest, for example an overseas supplier that charges no tax.

  1. Go to Suppliers and open the supplier, or click Add Supplier.
  2. Enter the rate in Default tax (%), next to Currency.
  3. Click Save.

Enter 0 for a supplier that charges no tax. Leave the field empty to use the store default from Settings.

Which tax a new PO gets

When you create a purchase order, the app fills in the Tax field in this order:

  1. Tax rates by province or state. If the PO's ship-to address matches a rate in Settings > Tax rates, that rate is used.
  2. The supplier's default tax, if the supplier has one, including 0.
  3. The store's default tax from Settings > Purchase orders.

If none of these apply, the Tax starts at 0, as before.

The default applies to every new PO: POs you create yourself, POs split by supplier with Auto select supplier, Auto POs and POs created from Smart Reorder. POs made from Vendors use the store default.

Good to know

  • You can still change the Tax on any PO after you create it.
  • The default is only applied when a PO is created. Editing a PO, or changing its supplier, doesn't change its Tax.
  • A duplicated PO keeps the Tax of the original PO.
  • POs created before you set a default are not changed.
